26 Pounds Lighter
I will be retiring this June after 40 years as an educator. I have quite a list of things I want to do and accomplish; travel, volunteer work, spend more time with our grandkids, and lots of projects around the house. I realize that being fit will make these activities all the more enjoyable. At 62, I want to enter retirement in the best shape possible.
Nine years ago, I gained over 25 pounds as a result of a year-long battle with breast cancer. Medications, lack of exercise, and changes in metabolism played a big role. Weight gained during chemotherapy is comprised only of fat (no lean tissue); and in terms of body composition, a woman going through chemotherapy ages 10 years in the course of a year. I’ve spent the last eight years immersed in “the knowing doing gap.” I knew what it takes to lose weight and get fit, but I just wasn’t making it happen. My goal was to get fit, but “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
And then…. Last July I saw a BE post on Facebook featuring my friend Maggie Meling. That was the moment when I decided to contact Adam and make an appointment to find out if BE would be a good fit for me. I was very impressed with Adam’s professionalism. He answered all of my questions and addressed my concerns. I committed to two days a week. After one month, I decided to increase to three days a week. My goals were to strengthen my core, tone my body, and lose weight without any injuries. Six months later I can say that I have met every goal (26 lbs lighter)! From my very first session, Adrian used his expertise to modify exercises to accommodate my capacity while providing a challenge. My muscles might be sore, but I have not experienced any injuries.
Yet, I must also extend credit where credit is due. Mindy Verissimo, Kerry Cardoza, and Kim Burks welcomed me that first morning (we are members of the 4:30 crowd) when I wasn’t sure if I would fit in. I can now call them friends and cheer leaders. Thanks ladies!
